Week of 2026-09-21

Google pushed two Ads updates this week: a holiday-focused Demand Gen feature drop and new AI Max transparency tools for Search, both worth a look before Q4 budgets lock in.

Act now

Turn discovery into action with September's Demand Gen Drop.

Google added three Demand Gen features: a conversational AI agent that lets viewers ask about products inside YouTube ads, one-click landing page taps on 9:16 image ads on Shorts and in Gmail, and Promoted pins for retail and dealership locations in Google Maps.

This is Google's official pre-holiday feature push, so treat the headline stat critically: Google's own claim that adding Gmail to Demand Gen lifts image creative conversions by 40 percent at the same ROI is a vendor figure with no independent verification, likely drawn from a small or favourable sample. The one-click taps and Business Agent are genuine friction reducers though, and Affiliate Location Extensions in Maps is a useful new surface for anyone with physical locations.

Lead genTest Gmail as a Demand Gen placement now given the low cost of trying it, but validate any conversion lift against your own CRM data before trusting Google's ROI claim, since Demand Gen inflates soft conversions easily.
EcommerceWorth testing one-click Shorts and Gmail image ads ahead of Black Friday given the short runway to holiday peak, and multi-location retailers should set up Affiliate Location Extensions in Maps now since local demand capture during the holidays has a short window.
Worth knowing

We're bringing AI Brief to more languages and adding a new AI Max reporting feature.

Google is expanding AI Brief, the tool that lets advertisers steer AI Max with written business context, to Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. It also confirmed a new unified reporting view coming to Google Ads that will show search terms, creative assets shown, and landing pages together for AI Max campaigns, with details and availability promised later this year.

This is a direct Google product announcement, so the facts are reliable, but the reporting feature itself is not live yet and Google has given no firm date. The unified search term to landing page view is the more consequential item because AI Max campaigns have been criticised for opaque targeting, and this starts to address that. It does not yet solve the deeper problem, which is that this reporting still shows what happened online, not whether those clicks turned into real revenue or qualified leads.

Lead genDo not treat this reporting as a green light to hand AI Max more budget. Until you can tie the new search term and asset data to offline conversion quality, such as CRM-verified sales or qualified leads, AI Max remains unsafe for lead gen regardless of how clean the new dashboard looks.
EcommerceWorth watching for launch since visibility into which assets and search terms drive AI Max traffic will help ecommerce advertisers sanity check automated bidding decisions against actual revenue, but there is nothing to action until Google confirms availability.
How this is made. Every issue is produced automatically by a system I built: it reads the official Google, Microsoft and platform sources each week, includes every distinct item scoring 70 or more (up to 20), and drafts the commentary and grades using AI. Issues marked reviewed have been read, edited where needed and approved by me before publication. Issues marked not yet reviewed are published exactly as the system generated them, have not been checked by a human, and are not indexed by search engines. This is the same kind of automation I build for clients, running on my own site.
